Take on a Gas Engineer Apprentice

Looking to train yourself, not hire? If you're an individual wanting to become a gas engineer, we have a page for you.

Gas engineer apprentice on the tools

Stop competing to hire engineers. Grow your own.

Qualified gas engineers are hard to find and expensive to poach, and the workforce is ageing. A gas engineering apprenticeship fixes the problem at the root: instead of fighting over the few engineers on the market, you train one to your own standards while they work in your business.

At The Skills Centre we make it straightforward. Your apprentice trains on the Level 3 Gas Engineering standard, spends around four days a week on the tools with you, and finishes fully Gas Safe registered. We handle the training, assessment and funding side, and support you through eligibility and enrolment.

Why employers choose the apprenticeship route

Build loyalty

An engineer you trained understands your customers and your standards, and tends to stay far longer than a lateral hire.

Productive from day one

Your apprentice is on real jobs with you four days a week, contributing while they learn, not sat in a classroom full-time.

Most of the cost is funded

Government funding covers the bulk of the training. Depending on your size and the apprentice's age, your contribution can be very small, or nothing.

Trained your way

They learn to work the way your business works, so when they qualify they're a ready-made fit, not a retraining job.

Apprenticeship funding, in plain English

Apprenticeships are free for the learner in England. As the employer you pay the apprentice a wage, and you may contribute towards the training cost, but it depends on several factors and for many small businesses the cost is minimal.

Levy-paying employer? You draw the training cost from your apprenticeship levy pot. Smaller or non-levy employer? The government co-invests the large majority of the training cost. Taking on a younger apprentice or a small team? You may qualify for full funding with nothing to pay towards training. We'll work out exactly what applies to you on the call, no guesswork.
