Become a Gas Engineer — Funded Skills Bootcamp for Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire
Train for your ACS gas qualifications in 10 weeks, with work experience arranged for you — you don’t go looking for a placement, we find it. Fully funded if you’re out of work. Cohorts are running across September to November.
Check if you qualify
- Cohorts September to November — enrolment open now
- 10 weeks of training, then a work placement — around 8 months start to finish
- ACS gas qualifications — Core Gas Safety, CPA1 and CENWAT
- Work experience arranged for you — we find the placement, not you
- Funded places — no course fees if you’re unemployed

This project is funded by the Mayor of the East Midlands and the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).
Can you apply? Five quick checks
The funding rules are set by EMCCA, so we have to ask these before anything else. If you can say yes to all five, you’re very likely eligible — the form takes about two minutes.
- You live in an eligible postcode. The bootcamp is for people living in specific Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire postcodes.
- You’re 19 or older. You need to be 19 or over on or before 31 August this year.
- You’ve lived in England for the past three years and can work in the UK. Three consecutive years’ residence in England, plus the right to work — you’ll show evidence (like a passport) at enrolment.
- You’re in work, self-employed, unemployed, or returning after a break. All four are welcome. If you’re employed there’s an employer contribution — see "What it costs" below.
- You’re not already on government-funded learning. If you’re part-way through another funded course (a BTEC, for example) or you’ve already done a Skills Bootcamp this funding year (August–July), you can’t hold a funded place on this one too — it’s one Skills Bootcamp per funding year.
At enrolment you’ll need to show ID and right-to-work evidence — a passport is easiest — plus proof of your address. Nothing unusual: roughly what you’d bring to start a new job. We’ll tell you exactly what to bring before your start date.
What you’ll train in
This is the same gas programme we already run — built around the ACS qualifications employers actually check for:
- Core Gas Safety — the foundation every gas engineer needs before anything else
- CPA1 — flue gas analysers: testing and interpreting combustion readings
- CENWAT — central heating boilers and water heaters: the work most domestic gas jobs are made of
You’ll learn in the training centre for 10 weeks — theory and hands-on practical work — and then move into work experience. We arrange the placement for you. Start to finish, the programme runs around 8 months, and you come out with the qualifications and real on-the-job experience, not just a certificate.
How it works, start to finish
- Weeks 1–10: train. Classroom and practical training at our training centre in the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire area.
- Then: work experience. We place you with an employer — you get real installs, real customers, real sign-off hours. You don’t have to find this yourself.
- Finish: qualified. Complete your ACS assessments and leave with Core Gas Safety, CPA1 and CENWAT — around 8 months after you started.
What it costs
If you’re unemployed: the course is fully funded — no course fees.
If you’re employed or self-employed: funding covers most of the cost, with a contribution of £650 — usually paid by your employer if they’re supporting you to retrain or upskill.
When you can start
Cohorts are running across September to November. Enrolment is open now, and with eligibility and evidence checks to complete before day one, the earlier you apply the better — we’ll confirm your start date on the call.
FAQs
I’m working full time — can I still do this? Yes. Skills Bootcamps are open to people in work who want to upskill or change career with their employer’s support, as well as the self-employed. There’s an employer contribution of £650 — see "What it costs".
What do I pay if I’m unemployed? No course fees — the place is funded.
What evidence will I need? ID and proof of your right to work in the UK (a passport covers both), evidence you’ve lived in England for the past three years, and proof of address. We’ll walk you through it — most people have everything already.
I’m already doing a funded course. Can I apply? Not while it’s running — funding rules allow one Skills Bootcamp per funding year (August to July), and you can’t hold two funded places at once. Once your current course ends, you’re welcome to apply for a later intake.
Do I have to find my own work placement? No — we arrange the work experience for you. It’s part of the programme, not something you chase after the training ends.
How long before I’m qualified? Around 8 months: 10 weeks of training, then your placement and ACS assessments.
